Less than nine months into his presidency, Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.
"I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership," Obama said from the White House Rose Garden.  "I will accept this award as a call to action."

A lot of people were surprised since most of us did not even know he was nominated.  Reporters gasped when Thorbjorn Jagland, chairman of the Nobel committee, uttered Obama's name  today.  The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognized Obama's efforts to solve complex global problems including working toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

The last U.S. President who has won the Nobel Peace Prize (while still in office) was Woodrow Wilson in 1919 and Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt in 1906. Over two decades after Office, Jimmy Carter won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.

Here's how they choose Noble Peace Prize Winners:

* The Nobel Peace Prize winner is chosen by a five-member committee of lawmakers elected by the Norwegian parliament. Specially appointed advisers weigh in.

* More than a year before the prize is awarded, the Nobel committee seeks nominations from members of governments and international courts, heads of universities, academics and previous Nobel laureates. Self-nominations are not allowed. The nomination deadline is February.

* The committee makes its final vote in October. The winner is determined by a simple majority vote.

The Nobel recipient receives a prize of about $1.4 million.

Congratulations President Barack Obama!!!
