United Health Care/CHCC Scholarships
Scholarship applications are now being accepted for Spanish-speaking Latino and Hispanic students pursuing health careers who demonstrate a commitment to working in underserved communities. The scholarships, offered by the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce and funded by the United Health Foundation, are part of the Latino Health Scholars program, which helps encourage Latino and Hispanic students to pursue careers in health care. "The California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce shares United Health Foundation's commitment to help pave the way for the next generation of Hispanic health care professionals," said Joel Ayala, President and CEO of the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce. "We believe the Latino Health Scholars program can inspire students to succeed in school and pursue rewarding, fulfilling health care careers that will make a positive impact in their communities." According to the U.S. Health Workforce Profile, health care professionals comprise nearly 12 percent of the U.S. work force. However, the Sullivan Commission on Diversity in the Healthcare Workforce reports that although Latinos represent 16 percent of the total U.S. population, they comprise only 4 percent of physicians, 6 percent of nurses and 5 percent of dentists.
